humanity icons colors

A while back we've posted an article about Ambiance & Radiance Colors, a theme pack that provides Ambiance and Radiance available in 8 different colors. Well, since then matching GNOME Shell themes were added and the GTK themes got some fixes from Light Themes Evolved, like a dark sidebar for Nautilus or unified menu and titlebar.

The themes are beautiful, but a theme pack is not really complete unless you have a matching icon theme, so Jared, the Ambiance & Radiance Colors Theme Pack author, has released a recolord Humanity Icon theme called "Humanity Icons Colors", which comes in 8 colors, with support for both dark and light panels: blue,  graphite, green, orange, pink, red, yellow and purple.

And of course, the new icons look great with Ambiance & Radiance Colors. Here are a few screenshots:

ronak plasma theme
A quick update for those of you who use KDE: Chakra Archimedes has been released with a beautiful new plasma theme called Ronak - if you use some other KDE-based Linux distribution, you can download Ronak via KDE-Look.

To install it, extract the downloaded archive under ~/.kde/share/apps/desktopthemes.

In my test, under Kubuntu 11.10 using KDE 4.8, the Chakra menu branding looks broken for some reason. If this occurs for you too, you can fix it by going to the Ronak widgets folder and renaming "branding.svgz" to "branding.svgz.old" (or replace it with some other image).

Good theme combinations are always nice to have. If ANewStart + AwOken GNOME Shell theme combination was a bit flamboyant, this one is more simpler, prefect for everyday use. Boomerang is a beautiful new GTK 3.0 theme made for GNOME 3.2 (Gnome Shell, Gnome Classic Fallback & Unity) and it looks extraordinarily simple and beautiful when used along with Faience icon theme and GNOME Shell theme. Let's see how it works.

holo gtk3 theme

Holo is a cool new GNOME 3 theme pack created by Tiheum (the Faenza icon theme designer) that tries to mimic the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich theme.

Holo was initially called "Ice Cream Sandwich" and only included a GNOME Shell theme, but a recent update brought matching GTK3 and GTK2 themes too.

Orion gtk theme

Orion is a new, clear GTK3 theme created by Satya, who's also behind other beautiful GTK and GNOME Shell / Cinnamon themes like Evolve, Shine, Minty, Ambiance Blue and others.

The GTK3 theme is powered by the Unico GTK3 engine, comes with a modified Boomerang Metacity theme and is compatible with GTK 3.2 (both GNOME Shell and Unity). Orion also includes a GTK2 theme, for compatibility with GTK2 applications.

emerald
Emerald Window Decorator is not available in the Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot repositories so to make it easier to install, I've uploaded the latest stable Emerald version (0.9.5) to the main WebUpd8 PPA.

With Emerald, you can get some beautiful window decorators, like the one in the screenshot above, or these:

Are you bored with your current theme? Here are 5 cool GTK2/3 (some also come with a Shell theme) themes that are optimized to work on any "shell": Unity, GNOME Shell or the GNOME 3 fallback session.

The themes are GTK 3.2 compatible and to install them in Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04, you can use the WebUpd8 Themes PPA - add it using the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/themes
sudo apt-get update

Then simply use the install command listed for each theme.

The PPA packages only install the GTK2, GTK3 and GNOME Shell themes (if available); some of the themes also come with AWN themes, Conky configs and more - to install them, visit the theme page.

1. Zukitwo Colors is a theme pack that comes with GTK2, GTK3 and GNOME Shell themes in 7 colors from Shiki-Colors (Brave, Dust, Human, Illustrious, Noble, Wine and Wise), as well as a color-neutral GNOME Shell theme (Zukitwo-Colors) and Metacity/Mutter themes for Dust (Zukitwo-Dust).

More GNOME Shell themes for ya. Following is one of the most distinctive GNOME Shell theme I have seen so far. This particular GNOME Shell theme, aptly named as Ice Cream Shell, is inspired from the latest version of Android OS called Android 4.0 codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich. To put it lightly, Ice Cream Shell is a job well done.

A quick update: Ambiance and Radiance Colors theme pack, which provides Ambiance and Radiance available in 8 different colors, is now available in a PPA for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and 12.04 Precise Pangolin users.

Using the PPA instead of manually installing the themes, you can stay up to date with newer versions without having to manually check for new updates. Add the PPA and install Ambiance and Radiance Colors GTK2/3 themes using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ravefinity-project/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ambiance-colors radiance-colors

Once installed, use GNOME Tweak Tool or Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 to switch to any of the newly installed themes.

To install Ambiance and Radiance Colors for XFCE/LXDE, instead of the last command above, use:

GNOME Shell is a fast evolving platform and like Unity, it is both loved and loathed by its vast user base.  But one thing I am so excited about GNOME Shell is its ever improving theme-ing capabilities. Third party GNOME Shell themes are pouring in and one such theme grabbed my attention like no other. ANewStart theme pack consists of both GTK 3.0 theme and GNOME Shell theme which makes it even more desirable. ANewStart GNOME Shell theme when used along with highly customizable Awoken icons theme is pure joy.
