A quick update: Ambiance and Radiance Colors theme pack, which provides Ambiance and Radiance available in 8 different colors, is now available in a PPA for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and 12.04 Precise Pangolin users.

Using the PPA instead of manually installing the themes, you can stay up to date with newer versions without having to manually check for new updates. Add the PPA and install Ambiance and Radiance Colors GTK2/3 themes using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ravefinity-project/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ambiance-colors radiance-colors

Once installed, use GNOME Tweak Tool or Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 to switch to any of the newly installed themes.

To install Ambiance and Radiance Colors for XFCE/LXDE, instead of the last command above, use:

Ambiance & Radiance Colors is a theme pack that provides Ambiance and Radiance available in 8 different colors: red, orange (different from Ubuntu orange), yellow , green , blue , purple , graphite (grey) and pink.

The pack comes with GTK2/3 as well as Xfwm4 and Openbox themes and should work on Ubuntu 11.10 or newer (as well as other Linux distributions such as Fedora 15, etc.) while the XFCE themes should work on Ubuntu 10.10+.

Light Themes Evolved initially started as an Ambiance theme modification for Nautilus Elementary. Later on, it became a full package that brings fixes and improvements to both Ambiance an and Radiance themes.
Light Themes Evolved - Ambiance and Radiance - include improvements like an uniform dark toolbar and titlebar, elementary applications tweaks, better scrollbars for applications that don't support overlay scrollbars and lots more. The themes were ported to GTK3 a while back, but they didn't include my favourite "fix": a dark sidebar for Nautilus (Ambiance). This fix is, however, finally available in the latest version.

Some neat welcome changes are going to land in Ubuntu 11.10 soon. First two changes below have already made it into Unity trunk and will most probably be included in next Unity release.

New Alt+TAB Switcher

Default Alt+TAB switcher has been improved with new better look. Check out the video below:

The current compiz based default ALT+TAB switcher in Ubuntu 11.04 looks like this:
The Ubuntu "Light Themes" Ambiance and Radiance have finally been ported to GTK3. The new version has just been uploaded to the Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot repositories and it uses a new GTK3 engine called "Unico" (available in the Universe repository), especially designed for the Ubuntu Light themes.

Here are some screenshots:

Ubuntu 11.10 has received many new updates in last few days. Here is a quick summary of recent changes.

LightDM

LightDM is now the default login display manager in Ubuntu 11.10. Currently it is not themed but a nice greeter will be designed before the end of the cycle matching with overall design of Unity.

Unity 3.8.16

Unity has received a bugfix update fixing some issues. Full changelog here. Unity 3.8.16 will also be released as an update for Ubuntu 11.04 users.

Unity 2D

This is follow up to our yesterday's post about the new Unico GTK3 theming engine in Oneiric. I will skip  providing instructions on installing the new Ambiance theme (based on Unico engine) as you will have to tweak lots of system settings using gsettings and dconf-editor. Also I think, sooner or later you will be able to change most of these settings from a GUI.

But if you really want to try this stuff, you can follow this thread on Ubuntu Forums for instructions. Keep in mind that Ubuntu 11.10 has not even reached Alpha 1, so you should not try anything on your production system.
Adwaita Theme Screenshots

Gnome 3 stack is steadily landing into Oneiric. Work is also being done to port default themes Ambiance and Radiance to GTK3.

Light themes in Oneiric will most likely use Unico theme engine and not Murrine as some style guidelines for GTK3 themes have changed. Unico was actively developed in past but the work stopped as the new overlay scrollbars in Natty took precedence. Unico engine is already present in Official Ubuntu 11.04 repositories but that should be only meant for testing purposes as it is far from being finished. However, the development has resumed now.

Unico Description in Launchpad

Unico is a Gtk+ engine that aims to be the more complete yet powerful theming engine for Gtk+ 3.0 and newer. It’s the first Gtk+ engine written with Gtk+ style context APIs in mind, using CSS as first class citizen.

No more information about Unico is available as of now. The package has been uploaded to Oneiric repositories only two days back.
