In a UDS session for Gnome 3 stack in Ubuntu 12.10, Canonical discussed about future plans of Unity interface.

They are already forking Gnome Control Center to Ubuntu Control Center and now they intend to end development of Unity 2D on desktop.
Gnome Shell is using Gallium3D LLVMpipe that allows it to run without a GPU. Using same tech, Unity 3D can be run on almost all hardware so it seems like Unity 2D for desktop is making its last appearance in 12.04.
Ubuntu 12.04 has already received first post release Unity update and its only second week since final Ubuntu 12.04 was released.

This release, specifically Unity 5.12 brings numerous fixes and optimizations including improved HUD and multi-monitor support, compiz fixes, dash improvements, music/video lens fixes and many more.
To upgrade, run update manager from session menu.

Ubuntu 12.04 'Precise Pangolin' Beta 2 has been released with new features, fixes and performance optimization. The main highlights of the Beta 2 includes new Unity version 5.8 and HUD support in Unity 2D.

Lots of under the hood work has gone into this Beta as Unity feels really snappy. Beta 2 is based on Linux kernel v3.2.12.

HUD was added by default in Ubuntu 12.04, but only for Unity 3D (with Compiz) and since feature freeze has passed, it seemed HUD wasn't going to be available for Unity 2D. But a feature freeze exception was made and Unity 2D now includes HUD.

HUD for Unity 2D is not yet available in the official Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin repositories yet, but if you want to test it, you can use the Unity Team PPA (there was an announcement a couple of days ago, but HUD for Unity 2D didn't work until a few minutes ago):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

(HUD for Unity 2D is also available in the Unity Staging PPA)

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 'Precise Pangolin' Alpha 2 is now available for download. Lots of visible changes have landed into Alpha 2. Lets look at them.

Linux Kernel 3.2.2, Rhythmbox is now default music player (ported to GTK3), LibreOffice 3.5 Beta 2, Thunderbird 10, Firefox 10 etc.

Ubuntu 12.04 is receiving lots of new features making it more customizable and user friendly. The performance has also received tremendous boost and everything is really fast and more snappier.

Lets look at these changes and new features. Some of the features have already landed in Precise while many others are available in Unity Staging PPA.
Pressing and holding Super key now displays a keyboard shortcuts hint overlay. This feature can be disabled from Compiz Config Settings Manager.
A new 'Unity Staging' PPA has been setup to test out Unity/Unity2D packages in Oneiric. These packages are built from trunk.

PPA Description:
This archive contains the latest builds generated from trunk, that have passed the unit tests, but didn't pass the user acceptance (autopilot) tests yet. Unless you are a developer and know what you do here, you should probably use the "unity-team/ppa" instead.

The packages in PPA are not recommended to be used on production machine. It can leave your system in unusable state so it would be better to try it out in virtualbox or on a spare system.
Run the commands below to add the PPA (Oneiric only at the moment, Precise build can be added later):

Back when Ubuntu 11.04 was released, we wrote a post about stuff you may need to tweak or fix. Some of those tweaks still work but since this is a new version, there are new things that need tweaking so I've decided to make a new post with some popular old tweaks as well as some new ones.

Read on!

A new update to Unity 2D brings it almost at par with Unity 3D as now both have same shared settings. Unity 2D now uses GTK3 rendering and also new indicators. In last few days, Ubuntu 11.10 also received many other updates bringing in changes to Ubuntu Software Center, update settings and session menu.

Unity-2D

In this big update, Unity 2D (version 3.8.12) received many fixes and new features:

Unity 2D GNOME Shell

There's a new cool dock in town and it works perfectly with GNOME Shell. Actually, it's not new and you've seen it in lots of screenshots or you may even use it already but maybe you didn't know that you don't have to run Unity 2D to use it: the Unity 2D Launcher.

Yesterday I've tried the Unity 2D Launcher in GNOME Shell (Ubuntu 11.10) and it works great (thanks to Luigi for the idea). Not only you can use quicklists and various custom launchers or lenses, but you can also use Ubuntu's Dash:

Further more, the Unity 2D launcher is automatically hidden when entering the activities overview so it doesn't interfere with GNOME Shell's Dash (the dock in the Activities Overview).
