Back in the day, downloading YouTube videos (and anything that run on Flash) was simple as anything (at least in Ubuntu). It is not so anymore. But there is this really useful script to download YouTube videos in Ubuntu running Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera without much trouble and in a deeply integrated way. So, here is how it works.

First of all, this is not a new application. YouTube Remote app is an official Android app by Google and it has been there for sometime now. It is one of the better apps for Android made by Google but not many Android users, especially newbies, know about it. Here's everything you need to know about YouTube Remote Android application.

Youtube unity lens scope

Lorenzo @ Atareao.es has created an Unity video lens and a YouTube scope for it, which lets you easily search and even play YouTube videos in either an external player (and thus, without using Adobe Flash) or your web browser.

The latest YouTube scope for Unity Video Lens comes with a tool which lets you select the external player you want to use for playing YouTube videos and it currently supports yviewer, VLC, Minitube (you'll need the latest 1.7 version) or your default web browser.

minitube
Minutube, a simple application which you can use to download and play YouTube videos without Flash, has reached version 1.7.

Among the most important changes in Minitube 1.7 are:

  • Clickable usernames in the playlist (so you can see more videos from a certain user/channel)
  • "Manually start playing" option
  • "Stop after this video" option
  • Window "Float on Top" option
  • Ability to skip to the previous video
The new version also supports passing an YouTube URL or even a search query via command line which means you can for instance create an Unity lens that opens videos in Minitube (like the one for VLC), browser extensions, etc.

Xt7-player

Xt7-Player is a graphical user interface for Mplayer with a huge list of features, "while trying to keep usability in mind". Among the most important features are YouTube and Shoutcast integration, dvbt, library and playlist management, local and global hotkeys, "stackable" Audio and video filters managed via drag'n drop, audio and video equalizers and lots more.

It can even watch your /tmp folder for Flash videos and play them (like a tweak we've posted a while back, but fully automated).

Minitube

Minitube is an application that lets you watch YouTube videos without Flash Player.

Minitube 1.6 has been released with a new feature that lets you share videos on Facebook, Twitter or email as well as bug fixes:

  • Find the missing parts of a video
  • Fixed bug with very short videos not playing
  • Fixed a security issue with temporary files and made sure temp files are always deleted

Minitube is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux and you can download it from HERE (there are only 32bit binaries for Linux).
To make it easier to install in Ubuntu, the latest Minitube 1.6.0 is available in the main WebUpd8 PPA (for both 32bit and 64bit) so you can install it using the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minitube

Gmediafinder is a GTK application that lets you search, view and download videos from sites like YouTube. Gmediafinder is a very good alternative to Minitube in Ubuntu. Gmediafinder PPA for Ubuntu is also available which makes its installation even easier.
